Working In Murano

CIAO! Time for a little Fun. March 2025, off to Italy. I have traveled to Murano, Italy numerous times over the years and I have made many connections with both American artists, living and working there but also formed amazing friendships with Italian Maestros and colleagues. I must give kudos to my dear friend, Alexis Silk who encouraged and assisted me in organizing studio time at ARS. ARS Murano is a glass factory which specializes in the production of artistic sculptures of their own design, all made according to the ancient technique of the Murano Glass Masters. ARS factory is one of the few which will open their doors to collaborate with other famous, international artists to assist them in the realization of their projects.

It was a challenge to organize everything, to say the least. Communication, logistics, I had to ship my graphite molds, sand forms, tools, colors, purchase new ladles to be welded and fabricated, figure out when and how the castings could be worked into the factory schedule. They do things different; I however, embrace change. I love the challenge and I learned so much! The most significant moment is how Maestro Christiano, punty's up the large casting and takes it to the glory hole. I have the upmost respect for the Muranese/Venetians and express my gratitude! ... Magic Happens in Murano.

SOOOO... with the assistance of Maestro Christiano, Alexis Silk and the ARS team, I cast a series of sculptures. These works are being acquired by one of the largest galleries in Murano and will be available for purchase soon.

Susan Gott taught at Rigid Sand Mold, Hot Glass Casting in the summer of 2024 at The Glass Furnace. "Thinking Outside of the Sandbox” This workshop took you beyond basic sand-casting and explored combinations of molds and casting techniques with focus on the ‘rigid-sand’ molds. We utilized these ‘binders’ as a tool to take sculptural ideas to the next level with hot glass casting. There were discussions of the use of cast glass in large-scale sculpture and public art, annealing, finishing techniques, paints, patinas, gold leaf, adhesives, and an overview of coldworking. Students were encouraged to explore the interior and exterior beauty of hot cast glass and how to make the magic happen!

Susan participated in the U.S. Art in Embassies program and traveled to Guatemala City in January of 2023. This program has played an important role in the diplomacy between the United States and other countries through art, now celebrating its 60th anniversary. At the invitation from Ambassador Popp and the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, Susan participated in the Artist Exchange Program. Her work has been on display for 2 years. During her visit, she shared her experience with artists, women in business, engineering and University students. These interactions highlighted the universally shared cultural bonds between America and Guatemala and further the program's aim of sharing the story of the United States through its artists.
